What a great poem! No one sums up a mid-life crisis like this writer.

Before Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Blake, or Shelley there was Charlotte Smith. As the first British Romantic writer, helped shape the romantic and gothic literature movements.

Her life seemed like one tragedy after another. She bore 12 children, of which 3 died very young. She had money troubles, men troubles, and her own personal demons.

Through it all, she bravely expressed her moments of deep pain through writing poetry and novels.

She had great knowledge of nature and botany which made it into her poems. (I could not help to think about her when I read "Where the Crawdads Sing.")

Smith was an important figure that few have heard of, and yet she inspired a generation of classic writers such as Jane Austen and Ann Radcliffe.

When I think of women of substance and literary pioneers, I think of Charlotte Smith.

Steve's words were educational and magical. I felt so lucky to have known him. ⁣

Now to see that Steve Smith Teas is still going strong (like the new cafe in trendy NW 23rd in Portland), it just makes me smile all over!

It's December 4, 2022 and I'm beginning to think about the year in review.⠀

What keeps coming to mind is what I've learned and who has impacted me the most—⠀

. . . in business and life.⠀

Leila Janah of SamaSource comes to mind because of all the good she did in this world. She has been a perennial thought.
⠀
She helped create jobs and taught marketable skills to over 11,000+ impoverished people. And this impacted far more than that.⠀
⠀
Global brands happily partnered with her because of the value and mission of her business.⠀
⠀
Though I've never met her, Leila has taught me so much. ⠀
⠀
It is tragic that she died at age 37 from cancer. ⠀
⠀
She had done so much, but so much was left to do.⠀
⠀
I hope that I, and countless others inspired by her, will continue her important work in our social enterprises.

Have you ever experienced someone who's always taking over and talking?

They think if they are talking, they're leading.

They talk At you not To you.

The truth is, it's almost impossible to learn while you're talking.

Granted, people think out loud and talk through their thoughts. However, most of the time, if they stopped to quietly listen to their own thoughts—and the vocal ideas of others—a higher level of clarity results.

Try it. Talk less, listen more!

Enough said.

It's said that the average successful CEO actually

It's said that the average successful CEO actually has an average IQ.

Many have gone on to verify this statement, such as billionaires and Pulitzer Prize winners.

I think it's true.

But what I see in the board room are people constantly vying for attention and control.

They think if they are seen as the smartest person, people will respect them.

When in fact, great decisions come from asking the best questions.

You simply ask, and then listen.

In doing so, it makes you wise. And if you're the smartest one in the room, it's time to find smarter people to challenge you—and then ask them the right questions!

Maybe it's my Gen X background, but I'm not into documenting my failures publically.⠀
For some things, maybe, but not everything.⠀
The latest generations feel as if the camera is always rolling. ⠀
Every big, small, important, and insignificant moment must be documented and posted publically.⠀
That's one way to do things. Perhaps that's a better way to build your tribe.⠀
But there is a lot to be said about being an iceberg. ⠀
There is nothing wrong with sweating it out all alone and showcasing your progress only occasionally. ⠀
That way, people have something new to talk about.⠀
That way, people--and more importantly, you--see progress.⠀
Let the masses lie and go about their day while you strive for greatness in the wee hours of the night or morning when no one is looking.⠀
You don't need daily praise.⠀
You don't need daily validation.⠀
There is just YOU and the daily WORK.⠀
And in time, progress from all the failures and recalibrations you've made to make your very existence ART.⠀

But I try not to let it get me down.⠀
Instead, I try to figure out how to get what I want.⠀
Even the impossible.⠀
Even the big dreams.⠀

I thought I was doing the right things.⠀
I was sure I'd win in business.⠀

And except for the loss of friendship, I'd do it all over again.⠀
Failure is feedback. ⠀
Analyzing failure is insightful.⠀
Recalibrating and improving what you've done is strategic.⠀
And not making the same mistakes twice is progress.⠀

Sometimes of lot of someone elses.⠀
I'm in business: it's expected.⠀
But what if you're not sure about someone?⠀
Or what if you want to quickly build up your team?⠀
It blows my mind why there is not a dedicated budget to this!
The social and collaborative GLUE to all of this is simple.⠀
And everyone knows it.⠀
It's food and laughter.⠀
If have both at the same time, and you build that relationship faster.⠀
